Intent Statement

As a school it is vital that we consider the child as a whole both at an academic and holistic level. We consider the curriculum to be one which is based o the development of subject specific skills, knowledge and through strong emphasis on the use of key vocabulary. The curriculum we offer is not only progressive in terms of the skills but also in developing a strong understanding of chronology. Through the well thought out curriculum our children are able to make connections with previous learning.

We aim to ensure our children get off to a flying start, despite their starting points and at which point the children enter the school. We do  this through the high expectations we hold and through the enriching opportunities the children have the chance to take part in.

Due to the high levels of deprivation within the locality and with the families the children come from it is vital that the curriculum and unique experiences we offer ensure that the children develop aspiration and have the same opportunities as their peers both locally and nationally. It is for this reason that all visits and visitors into school are always free of charge to the children. After school clubs that enrich the children’s love of learning further are also free to all children, again to ensure all children despite any disadvantage have the very same opportunities.

We intend for all our children to be ready for modern society and are keen to ensure all children understand the world that exists beyond South Elmsall. For this reason the curriculum intention is that all children will have the opportunity to attend residentials,

Our aim is to provide our children with an engaging, exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them for today and tomorrow.

Overall here at Carlton Junior and Infant School the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our diverse school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values with a vision to prepare them for life beyond primary school. We constantly provide enrichment opportunities to engage learning. We believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives, where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.  We use our core values to promote positive attitudes to learning which reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success.

Community involvement is an integral part of our curriculum, inviting families and visitors to facilitate learning new skills and sharing experiences such as Inspire sessions, regular parents evenings and visits to the library.

Children leave Carlton with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
