Our Curriculum

We are proud of the curriculum we offer our children here at Carlton.  All children have the opportunity to experience hands on learning along side formal learning within the classroom. We deliver a skills and knowledge based curriculum which follows the National Curriculum. Each subject is covered throughout school including within the Foundation Stage where we follow the Early years curriculum. Should you require any information about our curriculum or would like any part clarifying please get in touch and one of the phase leaders will gladly discuss this with you. Please email headteacher@carlton.wakefield.sch.uk should you require further information regarding our curriculum offer.

Curriculum Intent

As a school it is vital that we consider the child as a whole at both an academic and holistic level. We consider our curriculum to be one which is based on the development of subject specific skills, knowledge which also includes a strong emphasis on the use of key vocabulary. The curriculum we offer is not only progressive in terms of the skills but also in developing a strong understanding of chronology. Through the well thought out curriculum, our children are able to make connections with previous learning.

We aim to ensure our children get off to a flying start, irrespective of their starting points and the understanding of the world when they enter the school. We do  this through the high expectations we hold and through the enriching opportunities the children have the chance to take part in.

Due to the high levels of depravation within the locality it is vital that the curriculum and unique experiences we offer ensure that the children develop aspirations and have the same opportunities as their peers both locally and nationally. After school clubs that enrich the children’s love of learning further are free to ensure all children despite any disadvantage have the very same opportunities.

We intend for all our children to be ready for modern society and are keen to ensure they understand the world that exists beyond South Elmsall. For this reason the curriculum intention is that all children will have the opportunity to attend residential visits. .

Our aim is to provide our children with an engaging, exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them for today and tomorrow.

Overall here at Carlton Junior and Infant School the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our diverse school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values with a vision to prepare them for life beyond primary school. We constantly provide enrichment opportunities to engage learning. We believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives, where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.  We use our core values to promote positive attitudes to learning which reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success.

Community involvement is an integral part of our curriculum, inviting families and visitors to facilitate learning new skills and sharing experiences such as Inspire sessions, regular parents evenings and visits to the library

Children leave Carlton with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
